The history of Our Lady of the Lake University can be traced back to 1854 when the Sisters of Charity of St. Louis established a school for girls in downtown St. Louis. The school would later become known as Central Institute and then Saint Louis Female College. It wasn’t until 1888 that the school changed its name to Our Lady of the Lake College after a gift from Mother Marianna, the founder of the Sisters of Charity. In 1892, the college moved to its current location on DeBaliviere Avenue in east St. Louis. The university grew rapidly over the next several decades and in 1931, it merged with Webster University, becoming Webster-Our Lady of the Lake University. In 1942, SLU became coeducational and in 1963, it began offering degrees in nursing. Over time, SLU added several new majors and graduate programs, including business administration and education. Today, OLOLU offers more than 50 undergraduate degree programs and 14 graduate degree programs in areas such as business, liberal arts, nursing, law enforcement/justice studies and teacher preparation. The university also has a strong international presence with campuses in China and Croatia.
